The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, made a dramatic appearance at the party’s national headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, June 3, a day after his release from brief detention.
Wontumi was released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after successfully meeting his bail conditions.
Wontumi, who spent a week in detention, was greeted by scores of jubilant supporters as he arrived at the premises, where he publicly expressed his appreciation to the party leadership and grassroots members for their unwavering support during his time in custody.
Contrary to his earlier appearance on the day of his release, where observers said he was unwell, Wontumi, in all-white apparel, was beaming with smiles and exchanging pleasantries.
He even raised one of his legs to prove that he was okay, although he limped on the day of his release.
In an address, Chairman Wontumi singled out the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, for special appreciation, praising his leadership throughout his ordeal.
“I had to come and show how grateful I am. May God bless you. Everything will be fine,” Wontumi said.
Chairman Wontumi was granted bail to the tune of GH₵50 million with two sureties to be justified following his arrest on Tuesday, May 27, in connection with ongoing investigations into alleged fraud and money laundering.
It is not clear yet when the government will conclude investigations into the allegations and bring charges against the NPP firebrand.
