The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has announced that government has acquired two passenger vessels to operate coastal and inland water transport services between Accra and Takoradi, as well as between Ghana and Nigeria, as part of efforts to reduce pressure on the country’s road network.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, the Minister noted that congestion on major roads is largely driven by the increasing number of private vehicles, many of which carry only one or two passengers, compared to commercial vehicles that transport significantly more commuters.
According to him, the absence of reliable transport alternatives has forced many commuters to rely on private cars, worsening traffic congestion.
Mr. Nikpe said government is therefore retooling the transport sector and planning designated parking spaces within inner-city zones to encourage the use of mass transport.
He disclosed that the two vessels, which are expected to begin operations soon, will provide passenger transport services along the Accra–Takoradi route and between Ghana and Lagos.
The Minister explained that shifting a portion of commuter travel to water transport would significantly reduce vehicular traffic on the roads and improve overall mobility.
He expressed confidence that the introduction of the ferry services would help decongest roads and expand transportation options for commuters across the country.
