A three-year-old girl, Patience Nana Ampaw, has been burnt to death at Tikrom in the Ejisu Municipality of the Ashanti region.
The incident happened on Tuesday dawn, when a 21-bedroom compound house caught fire.
When the fire started, Patience was in the same room with Maame Akua Afriyie, her grandmother, who is also the landlady.
However, the old lady could not see through the excessive smoke to save the little girl.
Maame Akua Afriyie collapsed in the process.
The landlady suspects arson.
“I heard someone walking at the back of the house at night, but I couldn’t see the person, only to hear later that people were shouting and the fire was blazing,” she said.
Her son, Ernest Amoah, said he saved his mother but couldn’t rescue his niece.
“My sister informed me that my mother and her daughter were in the room, so I should come to their rescue. Unfortunately, the door was locked, so I used a block to break it.
“I thought my mum and the girl will come out but they did not. When I entered the room, my mum was weak, so I pulled her out. I couldn’t see the child,” he said.
The deceased has been buried while Police and officers of the Ghana National Fire Service continue their investigations.
According to the landlady, property worth thousands of cedis got burnt in the fire.
