Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul and Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery have been summoned to appear before Parliament’s committee responsible for security agencies.
This comes in the wake of accusations levelled by the opposition National Democratic Congress that soldiers are preventing people particularly in their strongholds from registering as voters.
Speaking to Joy News, Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, Seth Acheampong said the decision was necessary since both ministers must be given the platform to answer some questions relating to the frequent military brutalities.
“The Committee is not Seth Acheampong, it is a group. And we met them [Defence and Interior Ministers] before the exercise commenced and we want to get an update on issues that have arisen during the exercise,” he said.
He further expressed worry about how state institutions are being utilised by government to suit their own course.
He said, “The State established institutions are the very institutions we all use when we come into office. When it suits us, we adopt what they say but when it doesn’t, we throw it away. “
With less than 36 hours to the end of the voter registration exercise, the opposition NDC has called on Ghanaians to condemn any push by security agencies to prevent legitimate Ghanaians from registering.
Meanwhile, a Retired Military General, Kwami Anyidoho has advised soldiers to do their jobs professionally.
He noted that should the Ghana Armed Forces carry out their mandate as required by the constitution, they can handle every situation without denting their reputation.
“As someone who used to be in the service, I have always trusted the security services and I have always said if they do their jobs professionally, which I know they will, I have no reason for doubting them,” he said.
