The Director of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Ghana Police Service says Ghana is winning the war against human trafficking.

Superintendent Mike Baah stated Ghana was on tier 2 of the Trafficking in Persons Watch list but has improved and for the past three years maintained that position.

He was speaking on the sidelines of a media engagement training organized by the Coalition Against Child Trafficking in partnership with Expertise France at the Sun Lodge Hotel in Accra.

He stated, “We are winning, we have recorded a number of convictions. We have increased our level of prosecutions, rigorous rescue operations to free victims of trafficking and we are working well to improve our current position”.

He further stated CSOs have been very supportive in providing support for rescueoperations, investigations and provision of shelter for victims

On his part, Director of Advocacy for the International Justice Mission, Leonard Ackon reiterated the need for regular training for persons working in the fight against human trafficking.

He stated it is very critical for the advocacy efforts. “There is the need to build the capacity of civil society organisations within the coalition to be able to efficiently engage Ghana’s mass media in doing public advocacy and increasing awareness about child trafficking on Lake Volta and human trafficking in general”

The Media and Engagement Training for members of the Coalition of NGOs against Child Trafficking brought together practitioners in the field who shared their hands-on experience with participants.

Host of the Super Morning Show on Joy FM, Kojo Yankson took them through interviewing skills and how to properly use advocacy as a tool to fight human trafficking.

Leonard Ackon of the International Justice Mission was the facilitator for the topic, Communication Skills on Human Trafficking.

Other Speakers at the event were the Head of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Mike Baah and Joy FM/JoyNews Journalist Maxwell Agbagba.

National Project Manager of Expertise France, Serge Akpalou stated the training programme is one of many to come.

It is one of many training programmes we are hoping to organize with civil society organizations and government partners.
