Former Attorney-General, Mrs. Betty Mould-Iddrisu has attributed Ghana’s democratic development and social stability to the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.

According to her, the National Democratic Congress (NDC)'s founder added value to the country’s sense of direction, essentially establishing her as a role model in Africa.

Speaking in an interview with Joy News’ Samson Anyenini on Saturday, the lawyer said it was sad that the former President did not live to see some of his ideals embraced by the country.

“I can safely say that he is responsible for the reinstitution of our democracy and constitutionalism in the country. I wish that he had lived longer in order to see some of the ideals that he himself espoused coming more into the limelight,” she noted.

Since the death of the former President, tributes have been pouring in over his charisma and contribution to the country's democracy.

Already, high ranking government officials and political figures have trooped to his home to commiserate with the bereaved family.

Among other things, President Akufo-Addo has announced a seven-day national mourning for the late head of state while the various political parties have suspended their campaign.

Sharing her memories of the former President on Newsfile, Mrs. Mould-Iddrisu referred to Mr. Rawlings as an advocate for the masses, whose core belief revolved around equity.

“Most of the time, you go anywhere with His Excellency Jerry John Rawlings and he is there talking to the waiters, the drivers – the masses. He lived the ideals he espoused, and in leadership, it’s an extremely difficult and complex concept,” she added.

Jerry John Rawlings passed away at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital on Thursday, November 12, at age 73.

He is reported to have contracted Covid-19.

Rawlings ruled the country from 1981 to 2001 and also for a brief period in 1979.

He led a military junta until 1992, and then served two terms as the democratically elected President of Ghana.
