A Senior Lecturer at the Department of Economics at the University of Ghana, Dr. Ebo Turkson says for President Akufo-Addo's Free SHS to survive long term, well-to-do parents should be allowed to pay the fees of their children.
According to him, this will reduce the financial burden on government to maintain the policy.
Mr. Turkson appealed to Akufo-Addo to "look at the financing of free SHS" policy in his second term as some parents can afford to pay the fees being charged by the schools.
"I can bet that most parents can pay GHC1,200 as fees so that the most vulnerable will benefit. The free SHS is a good policy and I think if some parents are allowed to pay fees, the policy will not collapse.
“I can’t take my child to Achimota or Odorgonnor and then leave him or her and drive away and Ken Ofori-Atta (Finance Minister) pay for everything while I can pay for 10 people.
He also advised that for the smooth operation of the policy, all the necessary data on the students must be gathered to ascertain to determine the appropriate beneficiaries of the development in order to avoid discrimination and neglect.
"You need to be able to get the data to know how and who pays and who doesn’t pay."
