The Trade Minister-designate, Alan Kyerematen has commended government for introducing the 1-District-1-Factory (1D1F) policy in the country.
He told Parliament's Appointments Committee during his vetting on Friday, that, "The 1D1F initiative which has been led by the Ministry of Trade and Industry is one of the most revolutionary interventions to have been introduced in our country since independence.”
The Initiative is a key component of the Industrial Transformation Agenda of the NPP government.
The concept was first introduced by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Presidential Special Initiatives during the past New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, as part of an integrated programme for Accelerated Growth and Industrial Development.
Originally designated as the Rural Enterprises Development Programme, and later rebranded as the District Industrialisation Programme (DIP).
It was designed as a comprehensive programme for rural industrialisation, involving the setting up of at least one medium to large scale factory in each of the administrative districts of Ghana.
While previous attempts at rural economic revitalisation in Ghana had focused mainly on the provision of physical infrastructural facilities, the DIP focuses on the promotion of commercially viable business development initiatives, to generate sustainable and accelerated economic development in rural communities.
Mr Kyerematen told the Committee that the 1D1F initiative has brought jobs to ordinary Ghanaians and led to a boost in the country’s economy.
The nominee hinted that Ghana will enter a new trade agreement with the United Kingdom on March 5, 2021.
