The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) is demanding National Security investigates how a controversial textbook published by Badu Nkansah Publications has the National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NaCCA) and ISBN seals.
This move, the Association believes will help identify the lapses in the system and deal with individuals who may have reneged on their responsibilities.
Badu Nkansah Publication's ‘History of Ghana’ textbook for Class 3 generated an uproar amongst Ghanaians for describing the Ewe ethnic group in a derogatory language.
Speaking on JoyNews PM Express Tuesday, General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Musah said the 'Class 3 History of Ghana' textbook has the potentials of derailing the gains made in fostering national cohesion among all ethnic groups.
Mr Musah indicated that, "If the book is a draft, how come it had the NaCCA and IBSN seals. These are security features only approved books can carry. It is only investigations that can establish the facts for us.
"This matter could end up in court depending on how the pendulum swings and that is why we need the national security to establish the facts about the NaCCA seal and how the books got onto the market."
NaCCA in a statement revealed it did not approve the controversial textbook and directed the withdrawal from the public.
“In each of these books and others discovered on social media, the authors make inappropriate references to personalities and ethnic groups which are deemed unfortunate, distasteful and are in contradiction with NaCCA's Book Submission Guidelines” the statement said.
The General Secretary of GNAT also called on the various state institutions not to derelict their duty and further proposed a national audit of the education system to get rid of all unapproved textbooks in the market.
