The managers of the Kumasi Central Prisons say they are financially constraint in purchasing drugs for sick inmates.

Though they receive government's support, the prisons authorities say that is not enough. In most instances they have appealed for support from the general public.

The authorities also find it worrying the daily one cedi, 80 pesewas feeding fees for inmates at the Kumasi Central Prisons.

Regional Chaplain of the Kumasi Central Prisons, Reverend Canon Chief Superintendent Emmanuel Paa Kwesi Ansah, says A breakdown indicates every inmate is entitled to an amount of 60 pesewas per meal.

"Providing drugs for the inmate has been a challenge to us. When there sick we have to send them to the hospital and we need to buy drugs for them.

Some of them are in prison due to some circumstances, not all of them are criminals.  The government is doing its best, but we need the public to come to our aid" he lamented.

The Evangelical Presbyterian Church Ghana, Divine Grace Amakom Parish has donated cash, foodstuff and toiletries to support the Kumasi Central Prisons.

Resident Pastor, Reverend Obed Kwame Adzoga says it is a core mandate for Christians to donate to others. He encourages churches and individuals to reach out to the inmates regularly.

"We have realized that the number of inmates is more and the government cannot take care of them. As Christians it’s our core mandate to support people, out of this we can save their lives. As time goes on, we will definitely come here to support them" he noted.
