Former Ghana international Prince Tagoe is urging Black Stars’ coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor to revert to “Ghana’s old formation, 4-4-2”, which he believes will suit the style of play of the current Ghanaian players.

His comments come after Coach CK Akonnor came under intense pressure following incessant criticisms after Ghana’s poor show in the matches played so far in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Group G.

Some disappointed Ghanaians who were unimpressed with Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Ethiopia are still reeling over Ghana’s defeat to South Africa in the second group game.

Concerns have been raised about the tactical acumen of the 47-year-old tactician, prompting calls for his sacking.

But according to Prince Tagoe, who scored seven goals in 36 appearances during his playing days with the Black Stars, Coach Akonnor should adopt the favourable 4-4-2 formation Ghana used to play.

“We have our style of play that suits Ghanaians, and I think if they should take the 4-4-2, it will help us,” he told Luv FM in Kumasi.

“We need two strikers that will help us to get goals because if you are playing only one top, it’s difficult”.

Prince Tagoe, who emerged the top scorer of Ghana’s topflight in 2005 with 18 goals for Hearts of Oak, observed this as the major problem with the Black Stars and advised Coach CK Akonnor to find another striker to partner Jordan Ayew up front.

“That’s the main problem I can see with the team.

“We have to go back to our old 4-4-2 that we used to play, and that will be much better because if you put only Jordan at the top, he alone cannot score, so we need typical two strikers up front, and the other people can operate from the wings,” he stressed.

Hailed for the scoring prowess that earned him the popular cliché ‘Prince of Goals’, Tagoe also cautioned coach CK Akonnor not to be playing Black Stars captain Andre Dede Ayew as a centre-forward, not a striker.

“These are some of the things we need to look at because if you put Dede as a striker, he will find it difficult because Dede is not a striker.

“If Dede is playing behind the striker, it’s perfect, but if you put him as a striker, you are killing the team because if he gets the chance, he will score, but he is not a striker to move into certain spaces as a striker will do to finish,” he stated.
