The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga has expressed Parliament’s willingness to increase the budgetary allocation to the Ghana School of Law.
Speaking on Joy FM's Top Story on Friday, the legislator stated that the move would ensure that the issue of space constraint is addressed at the Law School.
“If the issue is space as the President indicated, in keeping with the requirement of fairness, we thought that as a Parliament, we were willing to work towards increasing the budgetary allocation to the Law School to be able to admit and provide training for the additional number of students,” he told host, Ernest Manu.
This comes after 499 candidates who sat for the entrance examination into the Law school were denied admission although they obtained the 50 per cent pass mark.
This is because "there’s no space at the Ghana School of Law to contain them," President Akufo-Addo said.
The President also noted that the situation is rather unfortunate as the problem has been a persisting one.
“For the time being, there’s no space in the Law School for them, and this is a problem. There are several others before them who unfortunately fell into the same pit. It may be that this group has decided to be more vocal than their predecessors,” he said.
According to Mahama Ayariga, Parliament is “willing to as a House work with the Law School to be able to address that space constraint.”
He added that he is of the hope that the issues gets resolved for justice, fairness to prevail in the country.
Meanwhile, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu has directed the General Legal Council to admit the 499 candidates who were denied admission to the Ghana School of Law.
