The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) says immediate steps are being taken to expel persons involved in the recent agitations in the Fomena constituency.

Some NPP members on Monday staged a protest by painting the party's office in the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) colours.

They accused its leadership of sidestepping electoral laws to favour Member of Parliament for the area, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, who quit the party to contest as an independent candidate in the 2020 elections.

Speaking on the matter on Thursday, NPP’s General Secretary, John Boadu, said the party is investigating the incident.

He noted that persons found culpable shall be disciplined in accordance with the party’s regulation.

“The party takes a serious view of this gross misconduct which is not only reprehensible but an affront to the very dignity and existence of the party.

“Accordingly, the party is taking immediate steps to expel all the persons behind this ungodly act, of course through due process,” he told the press.

He also denied accusations that the party leadership sidestepped electoral laws to favour Mr Asiamah.

“In announcing the rules and regulations for the polling station executive elections, we suspended about 10 constituencies, including Fomena, so we have not yet opened nomination.

“The party is yet to take a decision on the date of opening nomination, date of vetting, date of publication of vetting results and date of holding the election in that constituencies; this will be done and communicated in due course."

In view of that, Mr Boadu noted that “the party certainly, did not and could not have sent nomination forms to Fomena for the conduct of the elections, let alone to have handed all such forms to the independent MP [Mr Asiamah] as alleged."

Conflicts have rocked some electoral areas as the governing NPP begins reorganising processes ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Although the election of polling station executives comes off soon, some party members have accused their executives of hoarding the forms.

The February incidents include, Kwadaso in the Ashanti Region, where some NPP members locked up the constituency chairman on Saturday.

Similar agitations transpired in the Akuapem South Municipality of the Eastern Region and Ningo-Prampram in the Greater Accra Region.

Manhyia North and Ho Central constituencies have registered some debacles as well.

Currently, some party members in New Juaben North and Sunyani East have petitioned the court to seek an injunction of their respective polling station elections.
