The Programmes Manager of the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), Mary Awelana Addah has made a clarion call to citizens to ensure the fight against corruption becomes a success.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, she stated that there is the need to “tackle those who want to take this nation for a ride, ensuring that they enrich themselves, their cronies and then those politically exposed persons around them.”
“If we tackle this monster holistically, we would be making some significant inroads, but we need support from citizens,” she added.
Mrs Addah expressed doubt about the commitment of President Akufo-Addo to fighting the menace of corruption in the country.
According to her, despite a few reasonable efforts by the President to stem the canker, there is the need for him to demonstrate commensurate action with his speeches on dealing with corruption.
As a result, she urged the citizens to “ensure that we fight corruption by reporting and saying something when we see something going wrong.”
The discussion on Newsfile focused on the absence of a Governing Board for the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng nine months after appointment.
JoyNews sources say although the OSP has written multiple letters to the Presidency reminding it of the need to inaugurate the Board to ensure smooth operation of the Office, this has not been done.
However, the absence of the Board is not the only challenge facing the Office of the Special Prosecutor.
The other challenge is inadequate resources and the inability of the office to put contract workers on its pay roll.
Commenting on this development, Mary Addah noted that the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng has proved himself worthy to fight against the canker although he is restrained without a Board.
“We are beginning to see some action and the action that is being exhibited, but the OSP only goes to show that if we give him the needed support and logistics, something will come out of this struggle,” she said.
She said when this is done and seen to completion, “the trust of the people will be regained.”
Meanwhile, Private Legal Practitioner, Martin Kpebu has expressed doubt over the government’s commitment to equip state institutions mandated to fight corruption.
In an interview on Friday, he alleged that government officials are making huge money through dubious means, hence, will not support the course to strengthen any fight against corruption.
“It is the plain truth, let us just say it as it, because people are making money in government, people are making millions of dollars, so they are not eager to strengthen the Special Prosecutor to come after them,” he said.
