After failing in the 100m and 200m heats, Alex Amankwah is next in line to run Ghana’s penultimate track event at the 2022 World Athletics Championships.
The national 800m record holder heads to the tracks in the early hours of Thursday, July 21, to match his season’s best or better, and ultimately seek a semifinal berth which has been difficult to attain soo far by Team Ghana.
Speaking to Joy Sports, Amankwah says he is looking forward to running with some of the best athletes at the championships.
"It’s been a good season. I’ve had some good times - times close to my personal best which is the Ghanaian (800m) record and I am excited to compete with the world’s best," he said.
"[My body] is telling me it’s ready. I feel bouncy and just excited to see what’s out there. You never know how races go but it’s always good when you feel great before the race."
Amankwah qualified for the Championships after running a time of 1:44.97s at the Maryland Qualifier. He also made a time of 1:15:88 in 800m at the Penn relays a month ago and has looked good in training according to Team Ghana’s coach, Christian Nsiah.
"He is looking really good. I had to even back him off his pace a bit [during today's training session] but even that didn't work out well," Nsiah said.
"He is really good so he was running a little faster than the times he is supposed to hit according to his personal coach. He went a little faster so I think he is ready and we will see how it goes tomorrow."

Alex Amankwah will race in Heat 2 alongside Benjamin Robert of France, England’s Kyle Langford and Australia’s Peter Bol- Heat two will take place at 12.28am Ghana time.
