The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has adopted digital means to securitise the registration of all number plates.
Among other things, the initiative will help to provide unique identifiers and real-time information about vehicles to ensure safety and security on the road.
This comes after investigations by the Authority revealed that most vehicles on the roads are either using cloned or unauthorised number plates, a situation that is exposing road users to security risks.
Deputy Director in charge of Vehicle Inspection at the DVLA, Nana Eric Kwesi, made this known in an interview with JoyNews at the launch of the Ghana Drivers and Road Safety Awards 2022.
“Over the period, some of the investigations that we’ve made actually turn out that some of the vehicles that ply our roads actually have unauthorised licences and cloned plates that the DVLA has not certified” he said.
The situation, according to him, has triggered the DVLA to implement some relevant portions of the Road Traffic Regulations on the registration and number plate factor.
“We’ve tried as much as possible to make sure that all our processes are actually transformed into the digital space. So, one of the issues that we want to look out for is the vehicle registration licence plates.
“So, we are going to see the introduction of the securitised licence plate and, for the securiticed licence plate, it means that each and every licence plate that we are going to provide is going to have a unique identifier in addition to the registration number of the vehicle.”
This licence plate identifier is to synchronise with DVLA’s database so the law enforcer has the capacity to scan the licence plate and give a real-time information of the vehicle that has been registered by the Authority to impact safety and security on the road.
