The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) is accusing the Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority (GPHA) and the shipping lines for charging fees and bills in dollars contrary to the Bank of Ghana’s directive not to do so.
This, the association argues will defeat the government’s mission of stopping the pricing and charging of goods and services in dollars.
Speaking at a Pre-Budget Forum on Joy News, President of AGI, Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke called for the sanctioning of GPHA and other state institutions for charging fees and bills in dollars.
“We do not understand why GHPHA charges its rate in dollars. It is against the BOG rule. And therefore that agency must be brought to book”.
“Their current fees are all in dollars. Why should it be the case”, Dr. Ayim-Darke said, adding “the shipping lines there are also part of the agencies complicating the efforts of the President [Akufo-Addo]”.
In recent times, the cost of doing business in Ghana had shot up drastically due to the depreciation of the Ghana cedi and other factors.
Port charges have shot up significantly, increasing prices of good on he market.
