Local NGO, Legacy Foundation, is working to reduce poverty by promoting social equality in the country.
The group believes social inequalities due to gender, disability and religious beliefs have resulted in economic inequalities.
General Manager, Emmanuel Ayirebi, observed that persons living with disabilities have often not been granted equal economic rights.
“Sometimes it is very difficult for people with disabilities to feed themselves because there are no jobs for them. Some people don’t want to employ them because of misconception,” he observed.
He further explained, “aside the PWDs, other individuals are all marginalized, so we are making specific plans that will help them as well”.

The UN Sustainable Development Goal 10 aims at reducing inequality within and among countries.
In attainment of the goal, about ten target areas are earmarked for actions to be directed.
To the Foundation, the target area of improving equality within the country is yet to receive the needed attention.
“Even though some actions are being taken, we are far from reaching the desired results. It will take concerted efforts from all to get there”, Mr. Ayirebi said.
Through advocacy and economic support for the target group, Legacy Foundation is hoping to empower and promote social, economic and political inclusion.
Already, forty people within the target group have been identified for support through education and training in various vocations.
As part of a sensitization drive, advocates went through the principal streets of Kumasi to educate the public the effects of on discrimination.
