Drivers and commuters are unhappy at the current state of the Accra- Tema Motorway as more portholes spring up on the express highway.
They described the Accra- Tema Motorway as a ‘death trap’.
“It is a deathtrap because you cannot call these potholes,” some said.
Although governments have over the years promised to reconstruct the road, this is yet to happen with further deterioration posing a serious threat to motorists.
A concrete highway was built to speed up traffic between Accra and the nearby port in an industrial town of Tema in November 1965.
The express highway is now riddled with gaping potholes and drivers are fed up.
The motorway, which is notoriously known for some of the heart-wrenching accidents in the country, is getting more dangerous by the day.
In an interview with JoyNews, a commuter expressed his disappointment about the current nature of the road.
“The road is very bad and we are suffering on this road because they [authorities] are not maintaining it,” Noah Terkper said.
The speed limit on the motorway is 100 kilometers per hour, but with the potholes drivers are forced to slow down to avoid destroying their vehicles in the process, which creates congestion on the road.
The potholes also create inconveniences for passengers as well.
“Traffic is too much on the motorway, there are a lot of potholes on the way,” a driver said.
A passenger also said “nearly everyone uses the road, including those going to health facilities. When we ply the road, we get waist problems. It should be fixed.”
At night, the motorway is plunged into total darkness as a result of non-functioning street lights.
Meanwhile, there have been promises to rehabilitate the motorway since 2009.
The Roads Minister, Mr Kwaku Amoako Attah noted that the reconstruction of the motorway was scheduled to begin in November 2021 but failed, he promised August 2022, but to date, nothing has changed.
Although the motorway was made with concrete slaps, bitumen has been used to patch some of the potholes.
