The Minority is taking on President Akufo-Addo for claiming that the abandoned Saglemi affordable housing scheme will be too costly to complete.

This was after Akufo-Addo cut sod for the construction of a new affordable housing project.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony in Accra on Tuesday for works to begin on the new National Affordable Housing Project, President Akufo-Addo said the government would have incurred more debt in an attempt to complete the Saglemi Housing Project.

“It has been established that in addition to the $198 million already expended on the project, the government has to raise additional funding to the tune of $ 46 million to complete the infrastructural works. That is water, electricity, and drains to mitigate flooding.

“Further, $68million is required to complete the buildings and other essential onsite infrastructure works like the waste holding bay, sewage treatment plants and the development of socioeconomic and civic infrastructure such as basic school, clinic and shops,” he stated.

The Minority says the president's claims are untrue.

Speaking to JoyNews, Minority MP on the Works and Housing Committee, Andrew Dari Chiwitey, stated that the Saglemihousing project has been abandoned due to political reasons, not financial constraints.

"That project if well done should serve Ghanaians. That is why he's the president, he should be able to find resources to complete that project. He should not go about saying that it will be expensive, so we should abandon it, is that idea? If it will be costly to complete the project, should we leave it to rot? The level that we got to, as a president, we have used taxpayers money to build houses up to the level of just finishing then you tell me tt'd be expensive to complete it to drop it and go and start something afresh.

Yesterday, the Minority in Parliament boycotted the sod cutting ceremony for the new affordable housing project at Pokuase arguing that even before Parliament will approve financing for the project, the government had gone ahead to start it.

Mr Chiwitey also explained the full scope of the Minority's objection to the new project.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo noted that Cabinet has directed the Minister of Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye to explore the possibility of exposing the Saglami housing project to the private sector to complete at no further cost to the government.
