JoyNews is set to roll out a three-part documentary on the pillaging of Ghana’s forest reserves despite assurance by the President that all such reserves have been cordoned off and protected from invasion.
'Forests under siege' produced by Erastus Asare Donkor goes deep into some notable forest reserves to investigate how irresponsible mining is depleting important biodiversity.
Despite Ghana signing onto several treaties and conventions and climate actions, the rate at which miners are eating into the country’s carbon filters seems to outweigh and make nonsense of the government's greening initiatives.
Out of the 16 regions of Ghana, seven have been affected by illegal mining activities.
Thirty-four out of 288 forest reserves have been affected, with an estimated 4,726 hectares of destruction– larger than twice the size of the Ashanti region – according to the Forestry Commission.
Whilst the country begs for funds to slow down the destruction of its carbon filters, Parliament has amended environmental laws to “open up” existing protected and production forests for more mining.
Luv FM’s Erastus Asare Donkor and his team have been travelling deep into some of the country’s forests. The first part of this revealing series is focused on the Apamprama Forest Reserve.
“Think of Ghana’s forests as a pair of lungs or kidneys, cleaning our air and water, regulating rainfall, sunshine and serving as a buffer against natural disasters.
“Ghana’s kidneys and lungs are currently being attacked and perforated at a faster rate by illegal mining,” Erastus hinted.
Subsequent episodes are expected to focus on the Tano Nimri and Atewa forest reserves.
