Torrential rainfall Wednesday has caused the collapse of a huge colonial-era dam at Tinguri in the West Mamprusi municipality of the North East Region.
Floodwaters from the collapsed dam inundated the community.
This caused a bridge on the main Walewale-Nalerigu Road to cave in, leaving dozens of passengers and motorists stranded for long hours.
The downpour also flooded homes and destroyed public utilities in the East Mamprusi municipality and the Yunyoo district.
Officials in the region, including the disaster management organization, say it is, for now, impossible to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the situation as they called for immediate national attention.
Eliasu Tanko reports that all commercial activities in the most viable part of the region have come to a standstill.
A team from the Roads and Highways Ministry is on their way to the region.
