Member of Parliament for Akuapem South, Osei Bonsu Amoah, has defended his choice to withdraw from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary scheduled for Saturday, January 27.
The Minister of State at the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development explained that his decision is in the best interest of the party.
He asserted that he consulted with the party's leadership before making such a significant decision in his political career.
“It is for the people to judge whether I will be missed or not, and I cannot say whether I will be missed or not. I have been in Parliament for four terms and have also served in the executive, gathering a lot of experience along the way. I am still active in the party. Furthermore, I withdrew for the national interest of the party and personal interest.”
In a letter addressed to the NPP on Friday, January 19, Mr OB Amoah expressed his decision not to pursue his ambition for another term in office and requested the party's General Secretary to remove his name from the ballot paper for the upcoming election.
“I write to inform you that I have decided to withdraw as a candidate for the election of a Parliamentary Candidate for the General Elections in 2024 in the Akuapcm South constituency.
“I respectfully request that in accordance with the Public Elections Regulations, 2016, C.I. 94, my name should be deleted from the ballot paper for the election. I am most grateful and count on your cooperation.”
With OB Amoah's withdrawal, and should the party accept his decision, contenders for the constituency primary will be Kwame Ofori-Gyau, Eric Samuel Annor-Mensah, and Frank Aidoo, who holds the position of Municipal Chief Executive for Akuapem South.
