Ghana's Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif is confident the Accra 2023 African Games will be a catalyst for sports development.
Mr. Ussif was speaking at the official commissioning of the Borteyman Sports Complex by Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo.
"The forthcoming African Games carries immense significance for our national development and beyond. The event serves as a catalyst for progress, growth and development and the construction of state of the art facilities in the country not only provide the platform for athletes’ excellence but also contribute to the overall infrastructural development.”
The Olympic facility was commissioned just 25 days to the start of the 13th African Games.
The Olympic Stadium has five tennis courts, including a center court that can seat up to 1000 spectators, and three multi-purpose sports halls for basketball, badminton, table tennis and volleyball.
The Aquatic Center has a viewing capacity of up tp 1000 spectators.
Meanwhile, the LOC has confirmed that the Accra Sports Stadium and the Cape Coast Stadiums will host the men's and the women's football competitions respectively.
The Games was originally scheduled to be held in August 2023 but have been postponed until 8 March 2024.
The was due to the impasse between the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), African Sports Confederation, and the African Union (AU).
But even before the impasse, delays in the completion of the facilities for the games meant a postponement was inevitable.
