Ghanaian track and field athletes have taken to social media to criticise how the tartan tracks at the University of Ghana Stadium are being treated during the WAFU B U-17 tournament.
The tracks, which were installed to host the 2023 African Games, remain the only certified running tracks in the country, and athletes have not been happy with the way the tracks have been handled during the football competition.
During the Ghana vs Côte d'Ivoire opening game on Wednesday, pictures showed sharp edged chairs mounted all over the home straight side of the tracks, without any protective cover.
This has the potential to perforate holes in the track, which can cause damage that could lead to a loss of its certification status.
Joseph Paul Amoah, who won gold in the 200m running on that track, was among those who took to social media to voice out his frustration, alongside other members of the silver-winning 4x100m men's relay team.
Commenting under a picture posted on instagram, Joe Paul wrote,"That's our only certified track for Christ sake."
Ibrahim Fuseini, who finished fourth in the men's 200m final at the African Games also commented,"It's about time we need to stop doing this. This is the only track we have in Ghana now". He accompanied his message with a crying emoji.
Solomon Hammond, who ran the 3rd leg of the 4x100m relay team during the African Games said, "This can't be happening on the only certified track we have in Ghana now", before ending his comment with the sad face emoji.
