The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will today, Tuesday, July 9, unveil Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as "Napo," as the running mate t its flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2024 general election.
The ceremony will take place at the Kumasi Jubilee Park in the Ashanti Region, the party's stronghold.
The event is expected to attract almost all the prominent figures within the party, including President Akufo-Addo, the Council of Elders, Members of Parliament, and other key members.
On Thursday, July 4, the NPP's National Council confirmed the current Energy Minister as the running mate to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Dr Opoku Prempeh's selection has sparked widespread discussion across the country.
While some view him as an excellent complement to Dr Bawumia, others criticise him as being arrogant and hotheaded.
President Akufo-Addo has expressed his strong support for the duo, describing them as an "excellent pairing" and voicing his confidence in their potential to secure victory for the NPP in the elections.
In a statement to journalists, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the strengths and leadership qualities of both Bawumia and Opoku Prempeh, emphasising their suitability to lead the party and drive Ghana forward.
“National Council has endorsed the nomination of Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh to be the running mate of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
“The NPP has an excellent ticket, and we’re going to win with this ticket on 7th December 2024, that’s the news. The feeling is good, they make a very good pair, and they are going to win," he said.
