Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has firmly dismissed calls to refrain from expressing his views on the 2024 general elections, following backlash over his endorsement of NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Critics, including Movement for Change flagbearer Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, have urged the former president to avoid public endorsements, citing his status as a statesman.
However, speaking at the Ofori Panin Palace on November 27 during a campaign event in Abuakwa South, Mr Kufuor defended his endorsement, reaffirming his belief in Dr Bawumia’s leadership and capabilities.
“I am facing criticism for voicing my opinions on national matters due to my position as a statesman. Experience and wisdom are often associated with age,” Kufuor stated, stressing the importance of his political roots and the credibility of his views.
Explaining his unwavering support for the NPP and its candidate, he added, “The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is my political affiliation, and it was through this party that I attained the presidency.
"Additionally, my child, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has been elected through the party.”
Reflecting on Dr. Bawumia’s contributions during his tenure as President, Kufuor praised his competence, especially during challenging economic periods.
“During my administration, he was a member of the Bank of Ghana team and demonstrated remarkable performance during a challenging period when Ghana was in financial distress. Their efforts were instrumental in revitalizing the economy at that time,” Kufuor said.
The former president urged Ghanaians to support the NPP in the upcoming elections, highlighting Dr Bawumia’s leadership as a crucial factor for national progress.
