The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has criticised the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he described as its poor performance in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking during the “Enti Asanteman Aseda Ni” walk in Kumasi, Mahama highlighted the government’s failure to deliver on key promises to the region.
He specifically pointed to the non-operational Afari Military Hospital, a facility that, if functional, could ease the burden on the overstretched Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
According to Mahama, this neglect demonstrates the NPP's inability to address the pressing healthcare needs of residents in its supposed stronghold.
The former president also took aim at Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, accusing him of making frequent visits to the region out of fear of waning support.
He suggested that these visits indicate the NPP's declining influence in the Ashanti Region, once considered a bedrock of the party's electoral strength.
Mahama urged the people of the region to reflect on the NPP's track record and consider an alternative government that prioritises development.
He reassured party faithful of the NDC’s commitment to addressing the region’s challenges and delivering tangible results if voted into power.
“We saw the need to establish a military hospital here in Kumasi thus we commenced the Afari Military Hospital project. Sadly, they have ignored the Afari Military Hospital we started. I know that it is the NDC that will come and complete and inaugurate the hospital for Asanteman."
“From our tour at Oti, we planned to come to the Ashanti Region but we heard that Dr Bawumia will be touring the Ashanti Region for two weeks so we went to Western North, Western and Central Regions to ensure that we don’t meet for something bad to happen."
“After he left, we came in. I woke up to the news today that Dr Bawumia has returned to the Ashanti Region. No matter what he does, NDC will win the elections”, he stated.
