The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of comprehensive security measures for the final rallies of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), scheduled for Thursday, 5th December 2024, in Accra.
Both parties will conclude their campaigns with major gatherings, with the NPP rallying at the UG Sports Directorate park near the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, while the NDC will assemble at Zurack Park in Madina.
Concerns have been raised about the close proximity of the two venues along the Accra-Madina corridor, which could heighten the risk of clashes between supporters.
However, both parties decided to retain their selected locations, citing potential political disadvantages of relocating.
In response, the Police have outlined detailed plans to ensure peace and security during the rallies.
Supporters from both parties have been assigned designated routes to their respective venues. NPP supporters travelling from Adenta are directed to use Ritz Junction, American House, and Opkonglo, while those from Dome are to follow the Haatso-GIMPA-University of Ghana route.
Meanwhile, NDC supporters from Tetteh Quarshie are advised to use Shiashie, Lagos Avenue, and Trinity Avenue, while supporters from Dome and Adenta can follow routes through Wisconsin and the Madina-Accra Highway to Zurack Park.
Additionally, the North Legon and Memuna roads will be closed to facilitate the NDC rally, with heavy traffic anticipated on other routes.
To further enhance safety, groups are required to stick to approved routes, and motorbikes are prohibited near rally venues.
Police officers will be stationed along these routes to assist supporters and ensure smooth movement.
The public has been encouraged to report any security concerns via the Election Emergency Command Centre’s toll-free number, 0800311311.
