Ghana have been crowned champions of the inaugural edition of the WAFU B U-17 Girls Cup following the Black Maidens penalty shootouts win over Nigeria.
The Black Maidens defeated Nigeria 5-4 on penalties after playing out a 2-2 draw in 90 minutes of action on Sunday, December 22, at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence.
Nana Joe Adarkwa's side took the lead in the 14th minute through Gertrude Amoafo, giving Ghana a flying start to the game.
The lead was doubled five minutes later as Priscilla Mensah scored on the 19th-minute mark to extend the Black Maidens advantage.
Nigeria halved the deficit and gave themselves a chance in the 40th minute, making it 2-1 and giving the Ghanaians something to consider.
Despite the late goal, Ghana went into the break in the lead.
After the recess, Nigeria continued to chase for the equaliser and threatened on several occasions.
However, Ghana's Black Maidens held on to their lead for the opening exchanges of the second half. With 12 minutes away from full-time, the Flamingoes drew the leveller to make it 2-2.
The game proceeded to penalties with Ghana scoring all five of their efforts while Nigeria missed one of their five attempts.
The result also means Ghana successfully hosted and won the competition.
