The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is working to resolve withheld results as quickly as possible, with plans to recall staff earlier than originally scheduled.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, John Kapi revealed that the staff, initially set to report on January 6, 2025, would now begin work on the 3rd to expedite the process.
“This has been a very turbulent year for us, but we are taking steps to address the issues. By starting earlier, we can fast track the scrutiny of withheld results and release those free of incriminating findings so that candidates can continue with their academic pursuits,” Mr Kapi stated.
To interact with candidates involved in withheld results cases, WAEC plans to decentralize the process, holding discussions at its regional offices which is something they normally do. This approach, while effective, presents logistical and financial challenges due to the need for staff to travel across the country.
“Our officers would have to travel to various regional offices to meet the candidates, which comes with significant financial implications. We will require financial assistance to ensure this exercise is carried out successfully,” Mr Kapi explained.
Earlier, WAEC confirmed the cancellation of subject results for 4,108 candidates caught engaging in dishonest practices during the exams. Many of these candidates were identified on the spot and admitted to their actions.

Additionally, 483 candidates had their entire results annulled after being found with mobile phones in the examination halls which is a direct violation of WAEC’s rules.
“For withheld results, our examiners identified instances of collusion and sharing of information during the marking process. These cases require further investigation and hearings with the affected candidates before any decisions are made,” Mr Kapi added.
