The Youth Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Damongo has reportedly locked up the only mechanised borehole serving the Hangaline Community, leaving residents concerned about their access to potable water.
The borehole is the primary source of clean water for the community, making the action particularly impactful.
The decision to lock the borehole was led by some NDC youth and local executives, sparking widespread concern among the community.
Speaking in an interview Channel One TV, Kumatey Godwin, the Assemblymember for the Hangaline Electoral Area, shared that the borehole had recently been restored after being non-functional for some time due to an unresolved electricity debt.
Its revival was credited to the efforts of the Damongo Constituency Member of Parliament, Samuel Abu Jinapor.
In response to the incident, Iddrisu Dolina Sakura, the NDC’s youth chairman, defended the group’s actions.
He explained that their decision was motivated by the need for a proper transition of the borehole’s management into NDC oversight.
He also drew parallels to a similar situation in 2016, when the NDC handed over such assets during the transfer of power to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Residents have expressed frustration, highlighting the essential nature of the borehole for their daily needs.
Many are urging the authorities to resolve the matter swiftly to restore access to the water supply and avoid further disruptions to community life.
