The Minister nominee for Environment, Science, and Technology, Murtala Mohammed, has expressed concern about the low percentage of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) allocated to research, describing it as discouraging and highlighting the need for urgent reform.
Speaking during his vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament, he said, "The percentage of GDP allocated to research is far too low, and this is something that must change and as outlined in the NDC manifesto, President Mahama intends to ensure that more resources are dedicated to research, recognising its crucial role in the country’s development."
He also proposed that linking research institutions with the private sector, particularly industry players, could provide a practical solution.
"We need to show industries that research is not just important but essential to their success. By strengthening these connections, we can help industries understand how research is crucial for their growth and sustainability", he said.
He further emphasised that such collaborations would not only support research but also enhance the financial stability of industries.
"These partnerships will enable industries to secure the necessary resources to carry out their projects effectively, which, in turn, will benefit the wider economy", he concluded.
