Dennis Miracles Aboagye, aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has launched a scathing attack on the Mahama administration following the introduction of the controversial Dumsor levy.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, 7 June, he accused the current government of betraying public trust and resorting to deceit to secure power.
“It is a betrayal of trust. The situation we find ourselves [in] is simply a clueless, everlasting incompetent bunch of arrogant braggarts who have simply scammed their way into government,” Aboagye said in response to the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
The legislation imposes a GH¢1 per litre surcharge on petroleum products as part of measures to raise revenue for the energy sector.
The Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, defended the bill in Parliament, stating that the energy sector’s total indebtedness stood at US$3.1 billion as of March 2025.
He noted that at least US$3.7 billion is required to clear the debt, along with an additional US$1.2 billion to procure fuel for thermal power generation over the year.
However, the Minority Caucus has condemned the levy, describing it as a “predatory tax” that would extract an estimated GH¢5.7 billion annually from households and businesses.
They argue that the bill was rushed through Parliament without adequate consultation or transparency, calling for full disclosure on how the funds will be managed.
