Former Ghana Football Association President Kwesi Nyantakyi says acts of hooliganism are severely damaging the commercial value of Ghana’s domestic game.
Speaking in Scars of Hooliganism, the JoySports documentary that exposes the human and structural toll of football violence, Nyantakyi warned that ongoing fan disturbances are one of the key reasons corporate sponsors are staying away.
“When violence takes center stage in footballing issues in the country, it drives away sponsors,” he said.
“A lot of people don’t want to associate themselves with bad brands tainted with violence and illegality.”
Ghana’s Premier League has been without a headline sponsor since betPawa pulled out in November 2023, leaving clubs and the league body scrambling for alternative sources of funding.
“Violence has no place at all in the game,” Nyantakyi added.
Scars of Hooliganism features untold stories of players, referees, and supporters whose lives have been forever changed by violence at match venues. It airs all day on JoyNews, Monday, June 23, 2025.
