Thousands of mourners clad in black gathered at the Black Star Square on Saturday evening to pay tribute to the legendary highlife musician, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, during an emotional candlelight vigil held in his honour.
The event, which began at sunset, transformed the square into a glowing sea of candlelight and reverence as fans, fellow musicians, dignitaries and members of the public came together to remember the life and legacy of Daddy Lumba who passed away on 26th July after a short illness.

Organised by the Creative Arts Agency in collaboration with the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) on Saturday, August 2, the vigil was marked by live musical performances, spoken word tributes, gospel renditions, and the playing of Daddy Lumba’s most cherished hits, including Aben Wo Ha, Sika Asem, and Theresa.

Tears and quiet reflection mingled with spontaneous dancing as fans celebrated the prolific career of a man who defined the sound of contemporary Ghanaian music for over three decades.

Several prominent figures in Ghana’s music industry and political landscape were present, delivering heartfelt speeches that celebrated the life of a man widely regarded as one of the greatest African musicians of all time.

A minute’s silence was held in his memory, followed by the release of white balloons symbolising peace and eternal rest.
