A bizarre Henry Ansu own goal gifted Bibiani Gold Stars a 2-1 victory over Asante Kotoko in their GHALCA Top 4 opener at the Legon Sports Stadium earlier on Wednesday.
The Porcupine Warriors began brightly and took the lead in the 16th minute when Albert Amoah expertly controlled a cross-field pass before calmly slotting past Emmanuel Kobi to make it 1-0. Kotoko dominated possession thereafter, but a lapse in communication at the back proved costly.
A through ball found Atta Kumi who was fouled by Samba, resulting in the referee pointing to the spot. Kumi converted the penalty to restore parity before halftime.
The Porcupine Warriors pushed forward after the restart, with Amoah again coming close—only to fire wide from close range.
The miss proved costly as disaster struck in the 63rd minute. Defender Henry Ansu’s attempted back pass to goalkeeper Mohammed Camara went horribly wrong, rolling into the net to gift Goldstars the lead.
Despite late pressure from Kotoko, Goldstars held firm to claim the win.
Kotoko will quickly shift focus to the next challenge when they face Heart of Lions on Friday night, while Gold Stars will lock horns against Hearts of Oak
