Addressing policymakers and investors at REFA 2025 in Accra, Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor urged African countries to seize the moment and lead the global shift towards clean energy.
Citing rising climate vulnerabilities, he warned that the continent faces an urgent choice.
“We stand at history’s crossroads—Africa must lead in clean energy,” he said, echoing recent sentiments shared by Kenyan President William Ruto. “Without bold action, we will perpetuate the inequality.”
Mr Jinapor said Africa’s green transition should be viewed not only as an environmental necessity but also as a powerful economic opportunity.
“Africa’s green transition is both an environmental imperative and an opportunity for economic transformation, job creation, and sustainable growth,” he noted.
He called for unity and stronger partnerships across governments, industries and communities.
“We must come together with a united vision to place Africans at the commanding heights of the green transition,” he said.
“By fostering bold leadership and innovative partnerships, we can turn the tide on energy poverty and climate vulnerability.”
The Minister ended with a call to action, quoting an age-old Somali saying: “Poverty is slavery.”
He added: “Let renewables set us free. The time is now. Together, let us lead with ambition and determination to propel Africa into a new era where energy empowers people and economies thrive sustainably.”
