The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has paid tribute to the late highlife icon Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, describing him as a national legend and a loyal friend of the party.
Speaking to journalists at the musician’s funeral, the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, said the party had lost not only a cultural icon but a committed ally whose influence extended beyond music into national politics.
“He was an icon. He was a legend. For us, we have lost a huge friend. He was a friend to the New Patriotic Party,” Nana Boakye stated on Saturday, December 13.
He highlighted Daddy Lumba’s role in composing and performing the NPP’s campaign song for former President Nana Akufo-Addo, describing the late musician’s contribution as significant to the party’s political journey.
The final funeral rites for Daddy Lumba were held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, drawing thousands of mourners from across the country.
Fans began arriving at the Heroes Park section of the stadium early in the morning, paying homage to an artiste whose music has shaped generations and remains deeply woven into Ghana’s cultural fabric.
The atmosphere was marked by a blend of grief and celebration, as mourners sang and danced to Daddy Lumba’s timeless hits.
The burial followed a decisive ruling by the Accra High Court, which cleared the way for the funeral after weeks of legal wrangling among family members.
The court ordered the release of the body after applicants in the case failed to raise the GH₵2 million required to sustain an injunction preventing the burial.
With the condition unmet, Transitions Funeral Home was directed to proceed with the funeral arrangements.
Daddy Lumba, widely regarded as one of Ghana’s most influential musicians, leaves behind a towering legacy in highlife music and popular culture, as well as a lasting imprint on the country’s political and social life.
