The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has dissociated itself from recent calls demanding the removal of the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, amid growing public frustration over worsening transport conditions in major cities.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday, January 15, the National Spokesperson of the GPRTU, Abass Imoro, clarified that the union is not advocating for the minister’s removal.

“We [GPRTU] are not pushing for the removal of the Transport Minister,” Mr. Imoro clarified.

His comments follow calls by Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Drivers Association, David Agboado, who has accused the Transport Minister of poor management of the sector, particularly in Accra and other urban centres.

Mr. Agboado argued that persistent transport challenges — including commuters being stranded during peak hours and the charging of unapproved fares — reflect leadership failure at the ministry.

Speaking to JoyNews, Mr. Agboado claimed the minister has failed to adequately engage transport unions and other key stakeholders on challenges confronting the sector, insisting that the lack of consultation makes the minister’s continued stay in office untenable.

However, Mr. Imoro stressed that Mr. Agboado’s comments do not represent the position of the GPRTU.

“Mr. David Agboado spoke for himself on the matter and not on behalf of the GPRTU,” he emphasised.

When asked whether the union is satisfied with the performance of the Transport Minister, Mr. Imoro said the GPRTU has not publicly opposed Mr. Nikpe, despite having several concerns over developments in the sector.
