The Deputy Director of Operations of the United Party (UP), Miss Afia Korankyewaa, has thrown her support behind the government’s decision to rename Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport.
The government, through the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, recently announced plans to change the name of the country’s main international gateway, a move that has sparked public debate across the country.
Speaking in an interview, Miss Korankyewaa described the decision as timely and symbolic, noting that it honours the Ga people, the indigenous inhabitants of Accra.
“Who is Kotoka? As a nation, we should do things that will have a positive impact on children. We name national assets after good leaders like Dr Kwame Nkrumah, John Agyekum Kufuor, and J.J. Rawlings, who left good legacies, not someone who led a coup. I am glad this government, led by President Mahama, has decided to change the name,” she stated.
She further argued that the proposed name eliminates political bias and promotes national unity.
“One thing I like about the name is that no political party can accuse the government of bias. The name Accra International Airport honours the Ga Mantse and the Ga. Ga people should applaud President Mahama for honouring them,” she added.
The announcement has generated mixed reactions, with some supporting the change as a step toward inclusiveness, while others believe the existing name reflects an important part of Ghana’s history.
