The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has identified marijuana and tramadol as the most abused drugs among the youth in the Western North Region.
Principal Narcotics Control Officer, Western North Region, Mr Dennis Adutwum-Gyimah, expressed concern over the increasing usage of these substances and emphasised NACOC’s objective to ensure public health and safety through control, prevention, and eradication of narcotic drug trafficking.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Adutwum-Gyimah stated that NACOC was collaborating with security agencies to identify hotspots and conduct mass education on drug demand reduction in public places, including radio stations, churches, and educational institutions.
“Our focus is on public health and safety, and we’re working tirelessly to reduce the menace,” he said.
He advised the youth to stay away from drugs, citing the associated social vices, and urged traditional authorities to support NACOC’s efforts.
The commission has intensified its awareness campaigns, targeting schools, communities, and public gatherings to educate people about the dangers of drug abuse.
Mr Adutwum-Gyimah also cautioned drug peddlers that dealing in drugs was unlawful and warned that perpetrators would be made to face the full rigours of the law.
