President John Dramani Mahama has reportedly expressed strong displeasure following the interception of articulated trucks suspected to be involved in a transit diversion and revenue evasion scheme along Ghana’s borders.

The incident arises from a recent enforcement operation by the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

The exercise targeted trucks declared as carrying transit goods from Akanu to Niger through Kulungugu. However, checks conducted by authorities uncovered suspected irregularities.

Preliminary findings indicated that some of the trucks were moved without the required customs human escort — a mandatory control measure for transit cargo.

The development has raised concerns about possible internal collaboration and weaknesses within border enforcement systems.

Government officials say the incident highlights renewed efforts to clamp down on revenue leakages and strengthen oversight at entry and exit points. The administration has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that officers entrusted with safeguarding state revenue perform their duties without compromise.

Speaking on Citi FM on Monday, 23 February, Deputy Minister for Finance Thomas Nyarko Ampem disclosed that the President demanded an immediate briefing after the inspection team returned from the border.

“When we returned from the border, the President was waiting for us for feedback. He was so upset, and there is no way anybody involved in this is going to be treated with kid gloves,” he said.

Mr Ampem stressed that while some officers may be implicated, others played a critical role in uncovering the suspected infractions.

He added that the government intends to reward integrity and professionalism, while ensuring that any wrongdoing established through ongoing investigations is met with appropriate sanctions.
