The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has rolled out a large-scale clean-up exercise at Agbogbloshie Market to tackle growing sanitation challenges in the busy trading enclave.
The exercise, which coincided with the monthly sanitation day, saw workers clearing heavily clogged gutters filled with plastics, bottles, and other debris.
Speaking on the clean-up, AMA’s Director of Waste Management, Solomon Noi, highlighted the persistent waste management issues affecting the market.
He also called on the Ghana Water Company Limited to address illegal pipe connections, which contribute to drainage problems.
“Residents and traders must cooperate with sanitation authorities to ensure the drains are not blocked again,” Mr Noi said, noting that proper waste disposal and maintenance are key to sustaining cleanliness in the area.
During the exercise, heaps of refuse were removed from gutters along streets lined with vehicles and market stalls, exposing the extent of daily waste generated by trading activities.
Accra Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, outlined plans to transform Agbogbloshie into a 24-hour economy market aimed at boosting economic activity and creating more opportunities for traders.
To support the initiative, AMA will introduce a pilot programme to distribute segregated waste bins to traders, while government funds from the common fund account have already been allocated to ensure proper implementation.
Authorities say sustained efforts and active participation from residents and traders will be critical to addressing long-standing sanitation challenges in Agbogbloshie and similar communities across Accra.
The exercise is part of broader city-wide efforts by AMA to improve waste management, reduce flooding risks, and enhance public health in urban markets.
