The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has rescued two young girls trapped in a fire outbreak at the family house of the late Tamale Central Member of Parliament, Dr Murtala Mohammed, at Dohinna Yili in Tamale.

Dr Murtala Mohammed was among the eight state officials who died in the August 6, 2025 helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region while travelling to support efforts in the fight against illegal mining.

According to the GNFS, firefighters from the Tamale Teaching Hospital Fire Station responded swiftly to a distress call received at 15:29hrs on Wednesday, August 6, 2026, involving a fire outbreak at the 17-room compound house.

A crew of seven firefighters was dispatched at 15:30hrs and arrived at the scene at 15:37hrs to begin rescue and firefighting operations.

The Service said upon arrival, the team discovered two girls trapped inside one of the rooms affected by the fire. The firefighters immediately commenced rescue efforts while simultaneously working to contain the spread of the blaze.

The two girls were successfully rescued in good health, with no casualties recorded.

The GNFS said the fire was brought under control at 17:56hrs and completely extinguished at 18:07hrs.

Nine out of the 17 rooms in the compound house were badly affected, while eight rooms and their contents were salvaged.

The Service added that investigations into the cause of the fire have commenced.
