The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has called on his fellow legislators to draw inspiration from the exemplary relationship and conduct of the Jinapor brothers.
Addressing the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, 21 January 2025, during the confirmation of John Jinapor as Minister for Energy, Afenyo-Markin highlighted the need for collaboration and mutual respect among politicians. Acknowledging that energy policy was not his area of expertise, he deferred to minority members with relevant knowledge to contribute meaningfully to Jinapor’s approval process.
Afenyo-Markin described John Jinapor as an affable individual and commended his brother, Samuel Abu Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Damongo, for his dedicated service as the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources. “Ghanaians should watch this; the politics we do should not divide a family,” he remarked.
The Minority Leader used the occasion to urge members, particularly on the majority side, to avoid divisive behaviour during elections. “Those who go to polling stations and misconduct themselves should learn from the Jinapor brothers,” he stated, referencing instances where political rivalries had led to inappropriate conduct.
Concluding his remarks, Afenyo-Markin emphasised that the Jinapor brothers serve as a powerful reminder to all politicians that, despite being on opposing sides, they share a common space in service to the nation. He encouraged his colleagues to prioritise unity and collaboration over partisan animosity.
