The National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Mahama has claimed that President Akufo-Addo is reluctant to relinquish power to him due to fears of being held accountable for alleged state capture.
According to Mr Mahama, “they must be held accountable."
"That’s why Nana Addo says he’ll not hand over to John Dramani Mahama because he knows when I come, I’ll hold him and his family and his government accountable for what they have done."
Mr Mahama made these remarks following the release of the 'Agyapadie' document, which purportedly details a plan by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to seize state assets.
President Akufo-Addo has denied any involvement with the document, labeling it as a smear tactic to tarnish his image.
During his campaign visit to the Bawku Naba Palace in the Upper East Region, Mr Mahama suggested to the local chiefs and queen mothers that Akufo-Addo's reluctance to hand over power stems from a fear of facing scrutiny for his administration's actions.
He referenced a previous statement by Akufo-Addo, where he mentioned his unwillingness to transfer power to someone he had previously dismissed, as indicative of this fear.
Mr Mahama emphasised that those who have misappropriated Ghana's resources and abused their positions would be held accountable. He also assured that any NDC members engaging in similar misconduct would face the same consequences.
"And so, they want their Vice President to take over from them so that he can come and cover their back. It’s not going to happen, NDC is going to win the election.”

“Those who have made the people of Ghana suffer by misappropriating the wealth of the people by abusing their office will be held accountable for what they have done.
“But I’m always quick to add that when we come into government and we appoint people into office under our government, the same measure that we met to the outgone NPP administration is the same measure we shall deal with our people if they do the same thing the NPP has done.”
