Former President Nana Akufo-Addo has thrown his weight behind President John Dramani Mahama’s declaration of July 1, 2025, as a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, describing it as a “worthwhile initiative” that fosters unity, peace, and gratitude.
During a courtesy visit by the planning committee to his residence, the former President praised the move, highlighting its potential to unite Ghanaians across religious and political divides.
“All of us have to support this initiative. It is clearly a worthwhile initiative that we have this one day where all of us come together to give thanks to the Almighty for the many, many blessings He has bestowed upon us,” Akufo-Addo said.
He acknowledged Ghana’s relative political stability in the face of a history marked by military interventions, pointing out that the country remains one of the few in Africa that has avoided civil conflict.
Although the former President Akufo-Addo revealed that he would be outside the country on July 1 due to prior commitments, he assured the committee of his full moral support for the programme.
Chairman of the planning committee, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, expressed gratitude for the former President’s endorsement.
“He welcomed us, endorsed the whole programme and thanked the President for the great initiative. He commended us and we are very grateful,” Ankrah said.
The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving is expected to bring together Ghanaians of all faiths and political backgrounds in a nationwide act of reflection and gratitude.
