President Akufo-Addo has commissioned the first in a series of ongoing housing projects for the army under the Barracks Regeneration Programme, at the Burma Camp.
The newly constructed four block Duala Barracks accommodation facility comprise 64 two bedroom residential units for officers of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
The $100 million Barracks Regeneration Programme was launched in 2017.
It aims among others to fix key challenges facing the Service as accommodation is identified as a major concern.
Handing over a completed facility to serve as accommodation for 64 families, President Akufo-Addo urged the Armed Forces to take good care of the houses with regards to maintenance, “in order for them to stand the test of time.”
He announced that the Burma Camp roads will be constructed soon.
“I’ve been assured by the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwesi Amoako Atta, the member of Parliament for Atiwa West who is vigorously implementing the execution of an extensive nationwide roads programme that the sod will be cut next week for the commencement of the construction of phase 2,” he said.
The President challenged the men in uniform to lead by example by following strictly all the safety protocols so that others will follow suit and also applauded the GAF for its vigilance and diligence during the partial lockdown of Accra, Kumasi and Kasoa to help government fight the coronavirus pandemic.
According to him, their service was key in minimising the spread of the virus.
Defense minister Dominic Nitiwul said the barracks will witness significant facelift upon completion of ongoing projects.
Chief of defense staff brigadier General Obed Akwa says the forces remain loyal and resolute behind the government.
The Duala Barracks Regeneration Project (BRP) consists of 4 blocks each containing 16 flats of 2 bedrooms. Sixty-four troops and their families can thus comfortably live in these buildings.
