The Tamale North MP, Alhassan Suhuyini, says President Akufo-Addo is interested in crowning his 78th birthday with the passage of the "obnoxious" Electronic Transaction levy (E-levy) Bill and not a Black Stars victory against Nigeria.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, the MP noted that a credible source informed him that President Akufo-Addo has requested the passage of the E-levy Bill as a gift.
Mr Alhassan Suhuyini believes the information is credible as "almost all of his MPs are here in the House" today.
Also confirming the focus on the E-levy Bill despite the Nigeria-Ghana match coming off at the Moshood Abiola Stadium tonight is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Builsa South, Dr Clement Apaak.
In a post on Facebook, he showcased today's order paper that listed the E-levy bill, among other matters to be discussed. He believes Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta's presence in the House today is a testament to government's plans.
"The Speaker, ASK Bagbin, is in the seat. The Finance Minister is in the Chamber. Certainly, the processes will be activated," Dr Apaak stated.
Mr Suhuyini said this shows the President is not concerned about the Ghana-Nigeria FIFA World Cup qualifier playoff happening today at Abuja, as many Ghanaians assume.
Speaking ahead of the game on the Super Morning Show, listeners who phoned in were optimistic that Ghana’s national team will beat Nigeria and this victory will be the best birthday gift the team would offer the President.
However, Mr Suhuyini and Dr Apaak have assured us that the Minority in Parliament will reject the move to pass the E-levy Bill.
"137 NO votes against E-levy stands, no retreat, no surrender," Dr Apaak assured.
In his post, Mr Suhuyini wrote: "Well, the Minority MPs are here too. So the Black Stars are on their own in faraway Nigeria. The President is leading us to focus on E-Levy. So we move."
President Akufo-Addo turned 78 today, and Ghanaians on Twitter are celebrating the day with the hashtag #Mr President.
Various state officials also added their voices to the many praising President Akufo-Addo. They prayed for good health and strength on his behalf to complete his second tenure.
Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah tweeted: “Happy Birthday to the Boss!!! For a 78year old man, your energy is amazing. May God continue to give you strength.”
